Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any experience to start guitar lessons?
Not at all. Lessons are tailored to complete beginners through to advanced players.
What age groups do you teach?
I teach students of all ages, from children to adults and retirees.
Am I too old to learn guitar?
Not at all. Many students start guitar later in life and make excellent progress. I have helped many senior citizens overcome the dreaded barre chord!
What type of guitar should I buy as a beginner?
I can recommend a suitable guitar based on your goals, budget, and musical interests. Just send me a message and I will point you in the right direction.
Do I need to own a guitar before my first lesson?
It's ideal, but if you're still deciding what to buy, we can discuss options during your introductory lesson.
Do I need to bring a guitar?
Whilst I recommend bringing your personal guitar, I do have plenty of spares electric, acoustic and classical!
Helpful for students who are unable to bring a guitar, complete beginners looking to try before they buy and those looking to try a different style.
What is the best age to start guitar lessons?
Every individual is different, I usually recommend starting around the age of 6 and over.
How many guitar lessons do I need?
This will depend on your current level and goals. For beginners, weekly lessons for a longer period of time will be very beneficial.
Intermediate and advanced players looking to improve on specific theory and techniques can really benefit from small blocks of 2-3 lessons with time in between to process lesson material and practice.
Can you learn guitar if you have no musical background?
Absolutely! With me you will learn to be a competent guitarist and musician no matter where you start. I have many students who start with a completely blank knowledge and skill base.
How often should a beginner take guitar lessons?
For the first few months I recommend weekly lessons, with frequency reducing after the core foundation of technique and learning has been set. I will always be happy to teach you every week and can promise you will progress in every lesson!

Will I learn music theory?
Yes, but in a practical way that helps you understand the guitar and become a better musician.
How often should I practice?
Even 10–20 minutes of focused practice several times a week can lead to steady progress. I will give you a tailored pathway on how much and what to practice based on your goals and skill level.
How long does it take to learn guitar?
Everyone progresses at a different pace, but most students can begin playing simple songs within the first few months.
